New York City was alive with purpose and celebration as the Encourage Kids Foundation marked its 40th Anniversary Gala at the iconic Ziegfeld Ballroom on March 13, 2025. Presented by GFP Real Estate, with Rockwood as the anniversary sponsor, the event was a testament to four decades of unwavering commitment to bringing joy, comfort, and essential resources to hospitalized children and their families.
An Evening of Reflection and Future Growth
The night was filled with heartfelt moments, inspiring speeches, and generous charitable contributions. I had the opportunity to speak with Jean Butler, President and CEO of Encourage Kids, who shared insights into the organization’s journey and its future.
“Tonight we’re celebrating four decades of making an extraordinary difference in the lives of hospitalized children, and we’re very proud of that,” Butler expressed. “We also know that we need to continue to innovate, expand our reach, and touch the lives of even more children and families.”
When asked about the day-to-day operations, Butler highlighted the critical balance between programming and fundraising.
“We are knee-deep in programs like our ‘Send a Smile, Send a Bear’ initiative, our Pediatric Hospital Support Program, and our Mental Health Wellness Program. Managing these programs while securing funds to keep them running is essential,” she explained.
For those looking to get involved, Butler encouraged community participation.
“There are many ways to support Encourage Kids. Volunteers bring events like this to life. We also hold bear and toy distribution events at our partner hospitals, where we could use help packing gifts for children. Of course, donations are always needed, and people can contribute through our website, encourage-kids.org.”
A Star-Studded Celebration with Heartfelt Honors
The gala was hosted by Ryan Field, WABC-TV sports anchor, marking his seventh consecutive year leading the event. The evening also featured a touching moment when Wesley Hall, son of the late Michelle Hall-Duncan, presented the Michelle Hall-Duncan Humanizing Healthcare Award to Jacob Portnoy, CCLS at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children.
Additionally, the Jeffrey Gural Leadership Award was presented to Niraj R. Shah of Rockwood Capital and Brian R. Steinwurtzel, co-CEO of GFP Real Estate, recognizing their dedication to the foundation’s mission.
A particularly moving highlight of the evening was the keynote speech by Luna Oak, a pediatric patient and Encourage Kid, whose emotional story resonated deeply with attendees, reminding everyone why supporting this foundation is so crucial.
A Night to Remember
The ballroom radiated elegance, featuring breathtaking floral arrangements and intricate decor by Mike and Claire Van Konynenburg. Guests indulged in a decadent dessert display by Durst, while the night’s signature cocktail, the Blackberry Bramble, added a special touch to the celebration.
Beyond the glitz and glamour, the gala was a profound reminder of the impact Encourage Kids Foundation continues to make. From funding critical programs to brightening the days of young patients, the organization remains dedicated to its mission.
As the evening came to a close, the message was clear: supporting foundations like Encourage Kids isn’t just about a one-night event—it’s about making a lasting difference. Whether through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading awareness, everyone has a role to play in bringing joy and hope to hospitalized children.
