Qualifying Offers Declined by Alonso, Manaea, and Severino
As expected, all three players who received the one-year $21.05 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets have declined.
The qualifying offer is determined as the mean salary of the league’s 125 highest-paid players, with this year’s figure breaking records as the highest value.

Projected Contracts
The Mets extended the qualifying offer to first baseman Pete Alonso, left-handed pitcher/ace Sean Manea, and right-handed pitcher Luis Severino. It was expected for all three players to decline, as they all had an exceptional run with the 2024 postseason-reaching Mets – And can now chase long-term and high-value offers with any team.
1B Pete Alonso
- Expected to sign for a minimum five-years with a value over $175 million.
Homegrown Met Pete Alonso had an impressive run over the regular season and was integral to the club’s postseason run. He slashed a .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and played in every game in 2024. With a couple historical moments under his belt – One being the player with the most home runs hit in a rookie season (53/2019) – And being the first player in MLB history to hit a go-ahead HR while trailing in the 9th inning or later of a winner-take-all postseason game – It’s no surprise he’s one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason.
This is the playoff pumpkin. Pete Alonso picked it himself this week at a Wisconsin pumpkin patch. It's now another good-luck charm for the Mets. pic.twitter.com/l7ewDnvu6w

LHP Sean Manaea
- Expected to sign for a minimum three-years with a value over $90 million.
Sean Manaea stepped into the Mets’ ace role after injuries limited Kodai Senga to just one regular season appearance. He put up exceptional stats over the regular season, having gone 12-6 with a 3.47 ERA in 32 starts. The lefty was a key player in limiting damage and extending the Mets’ postseason run, having put up a 2-1 record with an ERA of 4.74 and 19 strikeouts in his four appearances.
Luis Severino just left for the airport — in full, normal street clothes — with “5-9” eyeblack on his face. He won’t be here for Game 2, as he heads to New York ahead of Game 3, but he’s still supporting Sean Manaea. https://t.co/hzhrMkqHdR

RHP Luis Severino
- Expected to sign for a minimum two-years with a value over $45 million.
League-veteran Luis Severino turned out a healthy and quality year with the Mets. He went 11-7 with an ERA of 3.91 over 182 innings for 2024. The right-handed pitcher was also a substantial factor in the Mets’ season turnaround and postseason grab, showcasing a multi-year-contract-worthy bounce back over multiple strong starts on the mound.

Unrestricted Free Agents
Now unrestricted free agents, Alonso, Manaea, and Severino are expected to meet with MLB’s 30 clubs – Including the New York Mets.
Mets Executive David Stearns has expressed an interest in bringing back these key guys, with the extension of the QO reflecting that. Meetings can be expected to take place with their respective agents in the coming weeks.
If they sign elsewhere, the Mets will receive draft-pick compensation.
