The New York Sirens continue their road trip as they travel to Place Bell to face off against the Montréal Victoire Wednesday night. Both teams come into Wednesday’s matchup winning their season openers. For New York, there were many bright spots in its 4-3 overtime victory over Minnesota Sunday evening that will look to shine bright against Montréal.
Rookies Making an Early Impact:
The whole offseason the Sirens success in the 2024 draft was a focal point coming into this season, and Sunday’s game proved just that. First overall pick Sara Fillier lived up to the hype notching two assists, including the primary assist on Alex Carpenter’s overtime winner. Gabby Rosenthal, the 19th overall pick of the draft, scored her first career goal from a tight corner side angle. It’s encouraging to see a handful of the young players have success in game one and their presence will be needed in order for New York to see continued success.
Special Teams Standing Strong:
At the conclusion of last season, special teams play was one of the few aspects of the game that wasn’t an issue for New York. The Sirens ranked second in the league in both power play and penalty kill percentage. The special teams followed suit in the first game of the season. The power play was 1/1 and the penalty kill 2/2 in the game’s most crucial moments.
The Quality of 5 on 5 Play
The first period of Sunday’s game brought flashbacks of last season as the Sirens could not generate anything offensively. Last season the conversation that arose after every game was that New York lacked the ability to score at even strength. Last season 34% of the goals that the Sirens scored were on the man advantage. So, seeing that Sunday the Sirens scored three of its four goals without the man advantage was huge.
