Brooklyn Nets Defend Home Court Against Atlanta But Begin Another Losing Streak This Week

By Jamie Rafael Mocling-Pan

The Brooklyn Nets ended their losing streak after stopping the Atlanta Hawks. Still, the victory was short-lived, as the Nets began another losing streak after taking tough losses to the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers. The single win and multiple losses this past week put the Nets at a 23-48 record and placed them in 12th place in the Eastern Conference Standings.

Brooklyn Safeguards Their Home Against Atlanta Hawks

The Nets brought some fiery offense in a 122 to 114 win over the Atlanta Hawks to break their three-game losing streak. The Nets and Hawks battled it out throughout the quarters as Trae Young and Cam Johnson put up great offensive performances for their respective teams. The Nets managed to squeeze out a win when they led by just one point in the fourth quarter. A rally sparked by the Nets that was started by Maxwell Lewis gave them a 10 to 0 run midway through the fourth quarter to help solidify the win. The Nets defended their home well for the sixth time in a row against the Hawks, with their last win over the Nets at the Barclays Center in 2021.

For the Nets, Cam Johnson had 28 points, Keon Johnson had 22 points, Tyrese Martin had 16 points, and Jalen Wilson had 13 points. Off the bench, Trenton Watford had 13 points, and Lewis had 10 points.

For the Hawks, Trae Young had a double-double with 28 points and 12 assists, Onyeka Okongwu had a double-double as well with 21 points and 15 rebounds, along with 3 steals and 3 blocks, Zaccharie Risacher had 16 points, and Dyson Daniel’s had 14 points. Off the bench, Terance Mann had 13 points, and Georges Niang had 12 points.

Boston Begins Another Losing Streak For Brooklyn

The Nets struggled to keep their momentum up going into the game against the Boston Celtics in a 104 to 86 loss. Even without Celtics’ stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, the Nets could not stop the likes of Baylor Scheierman and Kristaps Porzingis, who led the way to victory for Boston. The Celtics’ offense heated up after a three-pointer by Scheierman at the buzzer-beater to end the third quarter. Scheierman continued to shoot and made three more three-pointers in the fourth quarter to trample down the Nets even more. The Nets themselves could not get too much going and were all under the 20 points mark in the box score for the evening.

For the Nets, D’Angelo Russell had 18 points, Ziaire Williams had 15 points, Keon Johnson had 13 points, and Cam Johnson had 11 points. Off the bench, Watford had 11 points.

For the Celtics, Porzingis had a double-double with 25 points and 13 rebounds, including 3 blocks, Derrick White had 18 points, and Jrue Holiday had 12 points. Off the bench, Scheierman had 20 points, and Payton Pritchard had 10 points.

Nets Collapse in Indiana In Overtime Loss

The Nets were taken to overtime in a 105 to 99 loss against the Indiana Pacers. Despite a 10-point lead at half-time, the Nets only scored 39 points in the second half of the game, which led to a collapse in overtime after being outscored 14 to 8 in the loss. The Pacers managed to play well without Tyrese Haliburton, who was out due to back soreness. Benedict Mathurin picked up the baton for the Pacers, where he scored six points in overtime, helping the Pacers to victory. The Nets struggled to break through after halftime despite a double-digit lead, and another collapse occurred for Brooklyn, which led to the loss.

For the Nets, Williams had 22 points, and Russell had 22 points. Off the bench, Watford had 15 points, and Noah Clowney had 10 points.

For the Pacers, Mathurin had a double-double with 28 points and 16 rebounds, Myles Turner had a double-double as well with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaron Nesmith had 14 points. Off the bench, Jarace Walker had 8 points.

The Nets Fail To Split Series Against Indiana

The Nets lost their second matchup against the Indiana Pacers in a 108 to 103 loss. The Nets could not stop a Pacers team that has recently caught fire with a four-game winning streak. This winning streak had contributed to the Pacers winning six of their last seven games. This loss by the Nets was thanks to Pacers’ Pascal Siakam, who scored eight points in the final few minutes of the fourth quarter to help rally the Pacers to the win. The Nets continue their pattern of tanking and are unable to turn the tide their way and win games. Unfortunately, the Nets only made three field goals in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, which led to another collapse and another loss to add to their column.

For the Nets, Cam Johnson had 20 points, Keon Johnson had 17 points, and Wilson had 13 points. Off the bench, Watford had 26 points.

For the Pacers, Siakam had 26 points, Turner had 22 points, and Haliburton had 16 points. Off the bench, Mathurin had 13 points, and Obi Toppin had 10 points.

What’s Next For The Nets

It looks like it’s business as usual for the Nets, and the tanking ensues. The Nets did get a great win over Atlanta but could not stop the top Eastern Conference teams, which was expected. However, the Nets do not have the capability to secure leads, which may not be an issue for now due to the tanking. However, it could be an issue in later seasons if the Nets acquire young talent and fail to be defensive anchors. It’s a problem that’ll be revisited when the Nets head down that road, but for now, they can enjoy tanking their way toward a top pick.
