Prior to the start of the current NHL season, the New Jersey Devils re-signed restricted free-agent, Dawson Mercer to a three-year 12-million-dollar contract. Playing as a forward for the Devils, Dawson Mercer is constantly building momentum with the team and has now notably become known as the “Ironman” of the Devils.
Just this season so far, Dawson Mercer has seven goals and nine assists, totaling 16 points this year. Scoring his most recent goal against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 14 at the Prudential Center. Mercer has become a reliable player for the team; his agility and ability to anticipate the puck has made him an invaluable asset. He has made quite a career with the Devils and continues to expand.
Earning the name “Ironman” comes from the fact that since Dawson Mercer was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 2020, he has never missed a game, even through the times of COVID – 19. Amongst his three years with the team, Mercer has played all 82 games with the Devils. In the season of 2021-2022, Dawson Mercer was the only Devil to play all 82 games that season let alone. Becoming more impressive each time he handles the puck, Mercer continues to improve, always putting up an extensive fight to succeed.
Recently, Mercer just had to get 16 stitches, both inside and outside his lip, after taking a puck to the face. Yet, being asked if he wanted to take a day off and just watch, Mercer chose to play in the next game against Chicago, wearing a cage to protect his current stitches. He had a total of 18:01 on the ice that afternoon. Having true love for the game, he came back stronger than ever, putting up a two-point afternoon against the Blackhawks, further cementing his reputation as the Devils, “Ironman”. The “Ironman” of the Devils has not only set himself as a role model, but as a resilient player on and off the ice.
