Dawson Mercer: The Rising Star Powering the Devils’ Future

By LiaMarie Nuzzi

As the official NHL season begins, fans scout their team’s players and predict who will be playing to their max, who will have that outbreak of a season, and who will have that chance to perform even better than the year before. The New Jersey Devils have one of those players: Dawson Mercer, a center who wears the number 91.

Many fans were timid about whether Mercer would return to the Devils, but management knew he was needed. He is a mindful, swift skater who knows how to get the puck and always puts up a great fight.

At just 22 years old, Mercer has recently re-signed with the Devils to a three-year contract towards the beginning of preseason. Sept. 20, 2024, to be exact. This contract’s average annual value (AAV) comes to four million dollars a year, with twelve million at the end of the three seasons.

In the 2021-2022 season, Dawson Mercer was the only Devil who played all 82 games. He was also the first New Jersey player in the NHL to ever score against the Seattle Kraken (expansion team), marking the first of his many career goals.

The excitement reverberates as Mercer has continuously proven his worth. Mercer has been with the Devils since 2020 and has been playing since 2021. Just this season, He has already scored two goals and had an assist, and it has only been eight professional games. To see him with the Devils for another three seasons will be remarkable.

Mercer is going to have a tremendous year. Whether in terms of goals or assists, he will be one of the players who has a breakthrough. I’m eager to see what he offers the Devils for the next few years.
