A house fire in Sparta resulted in the death of one person.

On Thursday at 8:24 am, the Sparta police and firefighters were alerted about a house fire on Sawmill Road. When responders arrived at the scene, they were able to salvage the lives of three individuals, taking them into the safety of the outdoors. They were transported to Newton Medical Center following a preliminary examination by the first responders. The victims, as well as two officers, sustained minor burns and experienced smoke inhalation.

The responders and emergency crew teams were unable to save the last person still in the house as a result of the dangerous flames and smoke.

The individual was found unresponsive inside the home after the fire had been completely put out.

The crew teams consisted of firefighters from Ogdensburg, Andover and Jefferson, as well as Sparta.

The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by Sparta police detectives and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office.
