On Sunday, the Philadelphia Flyers hosted the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center. The New Jersey Devils took home a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Devils snapped their three-game losing streak in a pivotal division matchup, with the playoffs approaching fast. This win improves the Devils’ record to 34-25-6, while the Flyers fall to 27-30-8.
The Devils were proud to announce the additions of Cody Glass, Daniel Sprong, and Dennis Cholowski, who all shared their debut in the matinee matchup in Philadelphia. Glass appeared as the third-line center, while Cholowski was paired with Brenden Dillon. Sprong was paired on the third line to play the right winger of Glass.
At the 11:10 mark in the first period, Glass made his presence known by scoring his first goal with New Jersey, putting the team on the board 1-0 after a fantastic assist from right-winger Stefan Noesen and defenseman Luke Hughes. Hughes picked up his 24th assist of the season.
During the second period, the Devils had an outstanding performance in the offensive zone, which was highly needed due to their lack of scoring ability in previous games. They are also missing strong offensive players like Jack Hughes due to injury. Jonas Siegenthaler and Dougie Hamilton remain out due to injury as well.
Erik Haula scored his sixth goal of the season at 5:39 in the second, his first point since November 25th. The assist on Haula’s goal was credited to Johnathan Kovacevic and Brenden Dillon. Kovacevic recently signed a five-year extension with the Devils, and on Sunday, he reached a career-high with 16 points (one goal, 15 assists).
As the third period came around, the Devils still led 2-0 with Jake Allen in net. The Flyers struggled to get on the board throughout the game, but with 15:14 left, Jamie Drysdale finally found the back of the Devils net, getting the Flyers on the board 2-1.
As 20 seconds remained in regulation, the Flyers continued strategizing on possible ways to tie up the score and push the game into overtime. The Flyers had pulled their goalie, and the Devils remained on the power play as Dawson Mercer took advantage, scoring an empty-net, power-play goal. Mercer has scored goals in back-to-back games, showing his ability as a player. Haula and Ondrej Palat were credited with the assist. Haula earned himself a two-point night, which the left winger highly needed.
The Devils will next play the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Prudential Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
