The New Jersey Devils (30-20-6) prepare to travel to Montreal Saturday, Feb. 8, to face the Montreal Canadiens (25-24-5) for the third time this season.
New Jersey is coming off a tough 3-1 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights, where the team’s biggest weaknesses seemed to come to light. One large issue is just how badly the bottom six forwards need some new depth, as the offense has been dry. The Devils were also outshot by Vegas by 25+ shots for the first time since Feb. 16, 2020. On the flip side, the team has shown throughout the season that they can overcome slumps, and winning this upcoming game could be just what they need to get into the win column.
For the Canadiens, they are similarly coming off a loss, a 6-3 one against the LA Kings. Over their last 10 games, Montreal has had a record of 3-6-1, which shows they have been having a bump in the road lately too. Their position in the Atlantic Division also acts as proof for their struggle, as they sit 7th in the division with 55 points.
It is apparent that both teams are struggling and that they need this approaching game to end in a win for them. It is almost crystal clear that energy will be flying throughout all sections of the ice as these teams vie for victory.
Jonas Siegenthaler, Nico Hischier, and Jacob Markström are all on the Injury list for the Devils. Without their presence the team has been having some troubles staying consistent, but luckily, Erik Haula has made a return to the lineup as well as Simon Nemec, who is filling in for Jonas Siegenthaler. It wouldn’t be a surprise, though, to see some of New Jersey’s players be back on the ice after the 4 Nations break though.
On the other side of the ice Montreal will also be dealing with some injuries, like David Reinbacher, who sustained a knee injury 4 months ago on Oct. 8, 2024. The Canadiens aren’t suffering as much with their injuries, which could be an advantage for them.
At the moment the starting goaltenders for either team are undecided. The decisions for New Jersey are either Jake Allen or Nico Daws.
There is also some forecasted fights on the board as both defensemen Brenden Dillon and Arber Xhekaj are physical players who are set to play in the forthcoming game.
Puck drop between the Devils and Canadiens is set for Saturday, 1 p.m. EST.
