The Devils are entering San Jose with hopes of snapping a three-game losing streak Saturday, Jan. 4, at 4 p.m. ET.
After having a tremendous month of December, the Devils are starting off 2025 on a bit of a slow note. The Devils lost the last two games of December against the Carolina Hurricanes and then the Anaheim Ducks, followed by a 3-0 shutout against the LA Kings on New Year’s Day.
The Sharks beat the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday evening after losing eight straight.
The first time the Devils and Sharks met this season, the Sharks and former Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood shut out the Devils 1-0 at the Prudential Center.
The Devils have been struggling with consistency and depth scoring this season. The bottom six needs to start producing if the Devils want to stop getting shutout. They have been shut out six times in 41 games.
When it comes to special teams, the Devils have the Sharks beat.
The power play has also gone cold after looking like a power play ready to rewrite history. Despite losing the momentum it was riding for weeks straight, the Devils power play still ranks second overall in the league – a testament to how elite their power play was looking. The Sharks power play is currently 24th in the league at 17.7%.
The Devils penalty kill has only gotten better recently as they now rank seventh overall, killing 83.5% of their penalties. While the Sharks penalty kill is 17th in the league and kills 79.1% of their penalties.
Starting goaltenders have yet to be confirmed. With Jacob Markstrom’s play recently, it would be no surprise if he gets the nod. With Jake Allen recently coming back from injury, this could also be the perfect game to get himself back in the win column.
