On Tuesday, April 15, the New Jersey Devils played their final regular on-the-road game of the season, closing out in Boston with a 5-4 overtime win over the Bruins.
Brian Dumoulin lifted the Devils passed the Boston Bruins scoring the Devils fifth goal of the night in overtime. In total, the Devils had 26 shots on goal and the Bruins had 24. Both teams were consistent and fought back-to-back which made for an intense last game on-the-road for New Jersey.
During the first period, Timo Meier opened up the scoring, putting the Devils on the board 1-0. Meier’s 26th goal of the season was assisted by Brett Pesce and Luke Hughes. Shortly after, Morgan Geekie from the Bruins responded and tied the game 1-1.
As the second period rolled around, just 29 seconds in, David Pastrnak scored a nasty goal on the Devils, putting his team up 2-1 over New Jersey. Pastrnak earned his second point of the night with that goal—his first was an assist on Geekie’s goal in the first period. On the power play, around 4:07, Stefan Noesen tied the game back up 2-2, with assists from Nico Hischier and Timo Meier. Just 30 seconds later, defenseman Simon Nemec scored his second goal of the season with the New Jersey Devils.
Nico Hischier and Luke Hughes then picked up their second point of the night as Dawson Mercer scored his 18th goal of the season on the power play, giving the Devils a 4-2 lead over the Bruins. To wrap up the second period, the Bruins started to fight back and scored within the final four minutes. John Farinacci netted his first goal with the Bruins on home ice, bringing the score to 4-3.
In the third period, Marat Khusnutdinov scored for the Bruins around 5:08, tying the game 4-4 and sending it to overtime. A minute and 30 seconds into overtime, Devils defenseman Brian Dumoulin scored his third goal of the season, giving New Jersey the win. Game-winning assists went to Dawson Mercer and Timo Meier.
The Devils battled through a back-and-forth game and came out on top, thanks to a strong team effort and Brian Dumoulin’s overtime winner.
