Fire Does Not Stop Renovations At NJ’s Oldest Restaurant

Renovations are set to continue at Mendham’s Black Horse Tavern & Pub despite news that a fire ravaged through sections of the structure earlier this week.

The fire started in the wall between the basement and the first floor early Monday morning at 4 AM. Morris County firefighters arrived at the scene, staying for nearly two-and-a-half hours to extinguish the flames, inspect the area and extension and clear other areas from potential danger.

No one was injured and no one was present in the building at the time of the fire. Restaurant officials shared that the renovation schedule will remain on track, stating that they are “working closely with our team to address the damage to the Tavern and continue our exciting updates.” Black Horse Tavern & Pub also shared their gratitude for the public, and they displayed an American flag on Labor Day in honor of local first responders who helped in light of the recent fire.

Black Horse Tavern & Pub opened in 1742, and it has remained for nearly two hundred years, although it closed on March 4 for renovations to the interior, exterior and kitchen space. The restaurant plans to open its doors later in the fall. NJBiz.com reported that Black House will feature a new menu when it reopens. The interior will also call attention to Mendham’s history.
