The Gaudreau Family is looking to hide the release of some records regarding the death of NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.
An alleged drunk driver crashed into Johnny and Matthew as they were riding bikes in Salem County on August 29th.
The family wishes to keep a recording of the 911 call that alerted authorities about the crash and their deaths in private hands.
Almost two months after the unfortunate deaths, the Gaudreaus are requesting a court order that would restrict Salem County authorities from sharing any public records about the investigation. A hearing on this injunction will occur on Tuesday, October 8th. Officials will be kept private until the matter is discussed in court.
Several media outlets have requested records regarding the investigation from the Salem County Prosecutor’s Office while also seeking insight from the county government. William Lane, the family’s attorney, put forward a complaint on September 26th about the request for public records. The 911 recording, on-scene videos and photos, investigative reports and autopsy reports are among the items that have been requested.
Typically, individuals can access such footage after issuing a request, according to the Open Public Records Act (OPRA). However, the Gaudreau family claims a right to privacy, as noted by William Lane in his complaint.
