The DePaul Catholic High School girls’ basketball team is lucky to have a freshman making waves in the Big North United division.
That freshman is Giovanna Burress, the daughter of Plaxico Burress, retired star NFL wide receiver, and sister of Elijah Burress, who was a star wide receiver at DePaul and is now playing football at Notre Dame.
The star freshman is averaging 20.6 points per game, which places her third among the top nine scorers in North Jersey. She is also the top scorer among freshmen in North Jersey.
Burress can drive the lane and lay it up like a professional and shoot from the perimeter like Sabrina Ionescu or Stephen Curry. She has quick feet and can make defenders look bad with a mean crossover. She’s got game, and it is high time that people around the state start noticing.

According to the NYG Hoops Report, Burress is a player who possesses the ability to do it all offensively.
“Her game is defined by versatility, blending agility, strength, and a natural scoring ability that makes her an all-around offensive threat.”
Burress has exceeded expectations this season, scoring in double figures in each game she has played in. This includes almost willing DePaul to victory over West Orange on Jan. 30. In that game, her Spartans were down 30-16 at halftime, but Burress turned it on in half number two. Thanks, in no small part to Burress, DePaul was able to tie the game at 52 and send it to overtime. DePaul lost in overtime, 58-55, but Burress finished the game with a game high 30 points, tying her season high. It was a remarkable performance in a season that’s been full of remarkable performances.
Burress’ talents are not limited to the basketball court. She was a member of DePaul’s girls soccer team that became North Jersey Non-Public B sectional champions last Fall.
NYG Hoops Report speculates that “by this time next year, Burress should attract multiple Division I offers.” She should be a force to be reckoned with in the Big North United Division for years to come.
