Islanders Come Back After Two Consecutive Overtime Losses and beat the Canucks

Last night, the Vancouver Canucks and the New York Islanders faced off in British Columbia. The game resulted in a 5-2 loss for the Canucks, the Islanders took the win. The Canucks currently are 8-4-3 in the league after last night and the Islanders stand at 7-6-4.

Previously, the Islanders just lost two back-to-back consecutive overtime games, that were 4-3 losses, against the New Jersey Devils and the Edmonton Oilers.

The first period commenced, the Canucks scored first at 2:40 in the period. Goal was scored by Jonathan Lekkerimaki, this was his first ever career NHL goal to ever be scored, which opened up the beginning of the game. His goal was assisted by J.T. Miller (9) and Filip Hronek (5).

From there on, the Canucks received two penalties. One at, 6:41 in the period due to holding by Jonathan Lekkerimaki against Islanders, Bo Horvat. The second penalty was late in the first at, 16:33 by the Canucks, Carson Soucy for tripping against Bo Horvat. The Islanders finished off the first period by tying the game with a power play goal made by Jean-Gabriel Pageau (5), assisted by Anders Lee (6) and Oliver Wahlstrom (1). 

As the second period began, 14 seconds into the period, Islanders Scott Mayfield (1) scored his first goal of the season with assists by Bo Horvat (8). Just roughly two more minutes into the second, Islanders, Pierre Engvall (1) also scored his first goal of the season, his goal was assisted by Simon Holmstrom (6) and Grant Hutton (1).

For the majority of the second period, the Canucks faced three penalties — Islanders, only one. At 9:49 in the game, the Canucks, Teddy Blueger was called for Holding against Islanders, Casey Cizikas. At 14:03 in the second, Islanders, Matt Martin received a penalty for fighting against Vincent Desharnais — Desharnais also received this penalty for the Canucks. Lastly, the Canucks had too many men on the ice resulting in a penalty by Nils Hoglander. 

The third period commenced, Islanders score at 11:42, goal by Anders Lee (7) with an assist by Bo Horvat (9). 17:54 in, Islanders Noah Dobson (1) scores his first NHL goal on an empty net, assisted by Grant Hutton (2) and Kyle Palmieri (8) — a slow end and beginning to the third, lots of back and forth between both teams.

At 12:26, Canucks received their final penalty of the night for tripping Casey Cizikas by Dakota Joshua. Islanders also received a penalty, 15:06 late in the period for Scott Mayfield cross-checking against Elias Pettersson. The last goal of the night was scored by the Canucks, Tyler Myers (1) with an assist by Teddy Blueger (6).

Islanders goalie, Semyon Varlamov made 24 saves last night, resulting in their 5-2 win over the Canucks. The Islanders had 32 shots on goal, the Canucks had 26 shots on goal. The Canucks were quite tough on hits, averaging 26 and the Islanders with 15. The Islanders faceoff percentage was greater than 59.3%, and the Canucks had 40.7%. The New York Islanders will play their next game tomorrow against the Seattle Kraken at 4:00PM. and the Vancouver Canucks will take on the Chicago Blackhawks tomorrow at 10:00PM.
