Jacob Markstrom Shines For Devils

By Gabrielle Nordstrom

The days of the Devils struggles in net are long over as Jacob Markstrom has provided goaltending the Devils have not seen in years.

The Swedish netminder has played 34 games and has 21 wins, including three shutouts. His save percentage is .913% with a goals-against-average of 2.20.

He ranks fifth in GAA, 11th in save percentage and is tied for fourth in number of shutouts.

Markstrom has made highlight reel worthy saves night after night for the Devils. In the month of December, he was awarded third star of the month. The only other goaltender to be awarded a star of the month was Winnipeg Jets’ goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck.

Just about a week ago when the Devils were playing the Seattle Kraken, Markstrom had three highlight-reel saves, all making an appearance on the NHL’s Instagram page.

The consistency from him has given the Devils a chance to win every game he plays in. The success the Devils have had this season does not just fall on stars Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier. Markstrom has been a huge part of the Devils becoming a top team in the league.

When watching Markstrom, you can see him in net making first, second and third saves, never giving up on the play. His rebound control gives the Devils opportunities to get the puck out of their zone or to the boards. His ability to move side to side quickly is something past Devils’ teams have lacked, making him capable of making incredible cross-crease saves.

Markstrom has had some incredible outings this season, let’s look at some of his most impressive numbers.
– Jan. 16 vs TOR : 41 SA, 4 GA, .902% SV, OTL
– Dec. 27 vs CAR : 31 SA, 2 GA, .935% SV, W
– Dec. 2 vs NYR : 39 SA, 1 GA, .974% SV, W
– Nov. 12 vs FLA : 35 SA, 1 GA, .971% SV, W

Markstrom also had back-to-back shutouts against the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers.
– Dec. 21 vs PIT : 12 SA, 0 GA, 1.000% SV, W
– Dec. 23 vs NYR : 12 SA, 0 GA, 1.000% SV, W

With Markstrom between the pipes for the Devils, they will always have a chance at winning.

Catch Markstrom and the Devils this weekend as they host a back-to-back against the Philadelphia Flyers at 12:30 p.m. ET on Saturday and the Ottawa Senators at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
