Jersey’s Kanye Udoh has a Career Night as Army Routs Temple

By Christopher Shannon

Philadelphia, Pa. – “The Army Song” includes the lyrics, “And the Army goes rolling along.”  Through the first three games of the season the Army West Point football team had been the personification of those lyrics.  That early season roll continued for the “Black Knights of the Hudson” Thursday evening in Philadelphia as Army routed Temple 42-14 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Army quarterback Bryson Daily was the clear leader for the Black Knights against the Owls, going 2-of-5 for 54 yards through the air, while also compiling 152 yards with three touchdowns on the ground.

However, while Daily may have stollen the show for Army, Mays Landing native, Kanye Udoh, quietly, had a solid night as well for the Black Knights.  Udoh aided the Army rushing attack, averaging 9.1 yards per rush, carrying the pigskin 14 times for a career high 128 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Black Knights held Temple to just 219 yards of total offense, including -5 yards rushing.  Brett Gerena had seven tackles and a sack and Jaydan Mayes corralled an interception to lead the Army defense.

Pitman’s Gavin Shields led the Army defense’s Garden State contingent with two tackles and a pass breakup.  Brielle’s Casey Larkin and Middletown’s Jack Latore also found themselves on the stat sheet with a tackle each.

While the Temple offense struggled to find any rhythm, the Owls were led by quarterback Evan Simon and wide receiver Dante Wright.  Simon was 19-of-30 passing for 224 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, while Wright caught eight passes for 98 yards and a TD.

Defensively, the Owls, who struggled most of the night to contain Army’s option attack, were led by Tyquan King’s 14 tackles.

Representing New Jersey, Burlington City’s D.J. Woodbury contributed ten tackles to the Owl’s defensive effort while East Orange’s Sekou Kromah added four tackles, including one tackle for a loss.

River Vale’s James Della Pesca was one of Temple’s four captains against Army.

Temple and Army continue their seasons next Saturday.  The Owls will travel to Connecticut to face UConn, while the Black Knights will travel to Oklahoma to face Tulsa.
