On Sunday afternoon, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs played against the Syracuse Mets in Allentown. It was not their best game, as the IronPigs did not score and were shut out by the Mets, 7-0, in a seven-inning matchup.
Left fielder Jose Azocar was at the top of Syracuse’s lineup when a pitch hit him and put him at first. First baseman Joey Meneses hit a line-drive single to left field and was followed by second baseman Luke Ritter, who hit an RBI double, putting Syracuse ahead 1-0. Donovan Walton then grounded out, scoring Menses, putting the game at 2-0.
Mets catcher Jakson Reetz started at the top of the second with a walk. Diego A. Castillo doubled on a fly ball to center field. Luis De Los Santos grounded out, and the throw to first made it in time where he was out. José Azocar committed an error on the throw to throw to the first base, allowing Reetz to score to put the Mets up, 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, De Los Santos flew out to right field for one out. Azocar singled on a line drive to center fielder Rodolfo Castro, Singleton singled on a sharp line drive to right fielder, and Meneses singled on a ground ball to left field, which allowed José Azocar to score and extended Syracuse’s lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Syracuse also made a pitching change as Anthony Gose entered the game, relieving the starting pitcher, Brandon Waddell. Kemp started with a walk, Crawford struck out swinging, Kennedy singled on a line drive to center field, Rincones Jr. struck out swinging and Mercado walked.
As the bases were loaded, Syracuse decided to change their pitchers again. Tyle Zuber stepped in to replace Gose as the IronPigs had their best chance of the afternoon to get on the board. However Breaux flew out softly to the right field, ending their rally in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, The IronPigs put in a new pitcher, Michael Mercado, who replaced Sweet. De Los Santos singled on a ground ball to shortstop, and Azocar singled on a sharp line drive to left field. Singleton followed up with a double on a sharp line drive to right field, plating De Los Santos to score to make it a 5-0 Syracuse advantage.
Meneses then singled on a sharp line drive to left field to score Azocar, making the score 6-0. Following this, a wild pitch by Mercado allowed Singleton to score, making it 7-0, which is where the game ended.
The IronPigs may have fallen in this game, but they will return to play again on Tuesday at 11:05 am to play the Gwinnett Stripers.
