Mets blank Nationals 7-0: Sproat shines, Soto delivers

By Gabrielle Raucci

The Mets cruised to a 7-0 shutout victory over the Nationals, powered by Brandon Sproat’s dominance on the mound and from key batters in the lineup.

Sproat Goat, Six-Up-Six-Down Over Two Perfect Innings

Brandon Sproat was on fire today, tossing 2.0 innings while flashing an impressive five-pitch mix. His fastball sat between 95-99 mph, complemented by a high 97.5 mph sinker, among other pitches in his arsenal today.

The right-hander kept hitters off balance, inducing three straight groundouts in the first inning from James Wood, Amed Rosario, and Jose Tena. He carried that momentum into the second, generating two more groundouts before freezing Robert Hassell III on a 99 mph four-seam fastball to end his outing.

After dominating Single-A and Double-A last season, Sproat struggled against Triple-A hitters in Syracuse. However, his electric start to camp could put him on the Mets’ radar sooner than expected, especially with Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas sidelined.

Offense Delivers Seven Runs—Soto’s Early “ROI” with Second Home Run of Red-Hot Spring

At the plate, Luis Torrens singled on a line drive to [Nationals] right center fielder Alex Call for the Mets’ first two runs on the day in the first.

Superstar slugger Juan Soto wasted no time making an impact, blasting a two-run, 380-foot opposite-field home run in the second inning—his second homer of spring training. Soto finished 1-for-3, boasting a 1.569 OPS.

Fransico Lindor and Pete Alonso were also hot in the box today. Lindor went 2-4 with two singles, while Alonso smacked a double in the bottom of the fourth, raising his OPS to an impressive 1.727 this spring.

The Mets’ young talent also stepped up. While on-fire-Brett-BB7-Baty was noticeably absent from today’s lineup, Luisangel Acuña, also fighting for a bench role, picked up an infield single in the fifth.

Jett Williams entered in the sixth and reached base in both trips to the plate, recording an infield hit and working a four-pitch walk.

As the game progressed, Tyrone Taylor, José Azocar, and Mark Vientos drove in a run each.

Queens Relief Corps. Held it Down

The pitching staff remained sharp behind Sproat and held the Nationals to zero. José Butto navigated around a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning, while Huascar Brazoban followed with a clean frame. Yacksel Ríos touched 100.3 mph, and Luis Moreno dominated with six Ks over 2.0 innings.

Momentum Rolling to Port Charlotte

With spring training in full swing, the Mets continue to showcase their depth and emerging talent on both sides of the ball.

Sproat’s dominant outing, Soto’s effortless power, and substantial contributions from young prospects signal plenty of promise as the team fine-tunes its roster ahead of Opening Day.

With key arms still sidelined and competition heating up for roster spots, performances like today’s could have a lasting impact on the team’s early-season plans.
