As the New York Mets continue to evaluate their pitching depth this spring, all eyes will be on Brandon Sproat, the organization’s top pitching prospect, as he makes his first start of Spring Training today against the Washington Nationals.

Sproat, known for his high-octane fastball that can reach triple digits, has been a standout throughout camp and now has the opportunity to showcase his progress in live game action. The 24-year-old right-hander enters 2025 looking to build on a strong minor league track record.
Opportunity Knocks
Over his Minor League stint, he dominated at the Single-A and Double-A levels, displaying elite velocity and swing-and-miss stuff with a sub-3 ERA. However, upon reaching Triple-A Syracuse, he faced a steep learning curve, posting a 7.53 ERA over 28.2 innings as he adjusted to more advanced hitters.

Despite those struggles, Sproat has looked sharper this spring, refining his command and demonstrating improved secondary offerings. His performance in camp is particularly significant given the Mets’ uncertainty in the starting rotation.
Sproat Could Fit Mets’ 6th Man Bill
With Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas sidelined due to injuries, there is a growing opportunity for a young arm to step in. While Sproat was initially projected to begin the season in Triple-A, a strong spring could accelerate his timeline, potentially positioning him for an MLB debut earlier than expected.

As Sproat takes the mound against Washington, the Mets will evaluate his ability to command his high-velocity fastball, effectively mix in his slider and changeup, and handle major-league-caliber hitters. This outing could serve as an early indicator of whether he is ready to contribute at the big-league level or if further development is necessary.

Regardless of the outcome, Brandon Sproat remains one of the most intriguing arms in the Mets’ system, and his performance this spring could significantly shape the team’s pitching plans for 2025.
