Mets Win: Peterson Dealing, Alonso Goes Deep, Baty Stays Hot
The Mets are closing out their Grapefruit League schedule with another commanding 8-2 victory over the Houston Astros in Palm Beach, demonstrating a well-rounded execution on both sides of the ball.

With the next meeting between these two teams set for Opening Week (March 27) in Daikin Park, the Mets provided another strong indication of what they are capable of heading into the regular season.
Peterson Scoreless Through Five
David Peterson delivered one of his sharpest outings of the spring, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four. His fastball command was particularly effective, working the edges of the zone to keep Houston’s lineup off balance.

The reliever-turned-starter’s efficiency allowed him to work deep into his start, positioning the Mets well for the remainder of the game. Over 15.2 innings this spring, Peterson has pitched to a 0.52 ERA with 12 Ks—earning him a rightful spot in the front end of the Mets’ starting rotation for the 2025 season.
Big League Baty
Brett Baty continued to build his case for the starting second base job with another standout performance. He finished the day 2-for-3, lacing an RBI triple and a double while maintaining his impressive spring OPS of 1.010.
Defensively, Baty made one of the more notable plays of the game in the bottom of the third inning, diving to his right on a sharp ground ball before quickly getting to his feet and firing to first for the out.

His ability to impact the game offensively and defensively has been a major storyline this spring, and his production positions him as a legitimate candidate for an everyday role, especially at second base while Jeff McNeil recovers from an oblique strain.
Nimmo Looking Better Than “90%”
Brandon Nimmo contributed an RBI double in the fifth inning as he continued working back toward full form. After missing time earlier in the spring, Nimmo has returned to near regular play at the plate and outfield this week, looking increasingly comfortable in his swing mechanics and defensively tracking balls well.
His progression is an encouraging sign for the Mets, who rely on his consistency at the top of the lineup and in the outfield.
Polar Bear Power: Alonso’s Three-run Blast
Pete Alonso provided the game’s most significant power moment in the sixth inning, launching a towering 459-foot home run off Miguel Castro. The ball left his bat at 114 mph, indicating that his timing and power are coming together at the right time.

Alonso had been searching for his first home run of the spring, and this surefire moonshot reinforced the impact he can have in the heart of the Mets’ order.
Closing Out Spring Training on a High Note
With spring training (almost) in the rearview mirror, the Mets’ strong showing against Houston serves as a reminder that they are entering the regular season with momentum. Their pitching, defense, and power all came together tonight, and if they carry this level of play through Opening Week, the Astros (and the rest of the league) will face a team locked in on a World Series Championship.
