Preview: New York Mets vs. Houston Astros in Spring Training Opener

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL—Today marks the beginning of the Mets’ 2025 spring training, and the excitement is palpable as we take on the Houston Astros at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie. This game serves as the first opportunity for fans to get a glimpse of how this new-look Mets roster will shape up heading into the season.

All Eyes on Juan Soto

One of the biggest storylines today is the debut of Juan Soto in the Mets’ lineup. With the historic $765 million/15-year signing bringing the star outfielder to Queens, all eyes will be on Soto as he steps onto the field for the first time in orange and blue.

The Mets’ 1-2-3 in today’s game include Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso—arguably the best in the league—with Francisco Alvarez batting cleanup today.

With the fans pouring in over the week to get a glimpse of Soto in workouts, he certainly adds a level of excitement and potency to their (expected) dangerous offense.

Spring training is the perfect stage for him to build on the existing chemistry seen with his new teammates this week and to get acclimated to Mendoza’s philosophical approach on the field in a game scenario.

A major point of interest this Spring Training will be the competition for roster spots, with numerous players looking to make their mark. Look for young talents (and those up-and-down rotational guys) to play key roles as they vie for positions on the Opening Day roster.

The spring games are crucial for these players as they continue to showcase their abilities and prove they can contribute at the major league level.

Clay Holmes to Open the Season in Starting Rotation

Clay Holmes will make his first start as a New York Met, opening up baseball season with a new kick-change and an adjusted four-seam fastball added to his arsenal. With a strong rotation expected for 2025, today’s game breaks open a spring season of opportunity for both veterans and younger arms to find their rhythm.

Facing the Houston Astros is always an intriguing matchup, and while spring training results may not carry the same weight as regular-season games, there is still plenty to be learned. Especially as the first of the season, today’s game provides both teams with a chance to fine-tune their lineups and build team chemistry ahead of the regular season.

With beautiful weather in Port St. Lucie and a renewed sense of optimism surrounding the team, today marks the start of what fans hope will be an exciting and successful season for the Kings of Queens.
