Mets shut out Astros 5-0 in second Spring Training win

By Gabrielle Raucci

The New York Mets held the Houston Astros to a shutout in their second Spring Training win of the preseason.

Clay Feels at “Ho(l)me” in Rotation Role

Clay Holmes continues to showcase his strength in the rotation, delivering 3.0 scoreless innings in his second spring start against a potent Houston Astros lineup. Of the 42 pitches he tossed today, nearly 50% were strikes, with two Ks, one walk—and a dominant presence on the mound.

His spring ERA stays locked at 0.00 over 6.0 innings thus far, as he leaned on his 96 mph sinking fastball while mixing in more four-seamers as part of his transition from starter to reliever.

Also vying for a rotation spot, Griffin Canning followed Holmes’ lead with 1.2 scoreless innings, working around two hits and a walk while striking out two. Despite some soft contact in the fourth, he kept the Astros in check, proving he’s very much in the mix for a starting job.

Siri Sparks the Offense

Offseason addition José Siri put his speed on full display to manufacture the game’s first run in the fifth. He drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a groundout—a textbook example of aggressive baserunning that put the Mets on the board.

Young Guns Take Over in the Sixth

First baseman prospect Ryan Clifford made an impact today, launching a two-run shot to right in his first at-bat of the day. Though he grounded out in his second trip to the plate, the first swing was loud enough to make a statement.

Brett “BB7” Baty kept the momentum rolling, following Clifford’s blast with a two-run homer of his own, his second of the spring. Baty’s 1.727 OPS is among the best in camp as he continues to solidify himself as an everyday presence.

Kranick Cruises in Relief

Max Kranick put together a lights-out performance, tossing 2.0 perfect innings today, with his fastball notably tapping out at 97 mph. He wrapped up his first inning by winning an 11-pitch duel against Quincy Hamilton, retiring him with a curveball for a swinging strikeout.

As he transitions into a multi-inning relief role, Kranick is making a strong push for a bullpen spot when camp breaks.

Final Score: Mets 5, Astros 0. The pitching dominated, the bats delivered in key spots, and the young talent continued to shine.
