Mets Take Game 1 of NLDS

By Adriana Leone

Buckle up Mets fans, because this recap is about to be a rollercoaster ride. Saturday night, New York played Game 1 of its NLDS series between Philadelphia. Like most of the Mets recent games, Game 1 took fans through all the emotions.

On the mound for New York was Kodai Senga who hasn’t seen action since July 26th due to a calf injury. The pitcher didn’t start off too hot, allowing a home run to the first batter of the night, Kyle Schwarber. Senga would only pitch two innings, leaving the Mets to rely on their bullpen for the rest of the game.

Through seven innings, New York’s bullpen was lights out, allowing three hits and zero runs, keeping the Mets in the game.

On the bump for the Phillies was former Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler. Wheeler had arguably the best game of his career allowing one hit and getting nine strikeouts through seven innings. For the second straight game New York faced phenomenal pitching.

For Mets fans, it was like the steep incline of a rollercoaster, anticipating the thrill of the drop.

The drop came at full speed in the top of the eighth inning. Mark Vientos tied the game with a single to left field, bringing home Harrison Bader to tie the game up. Brandon Nimmo then followed suit with another single to left field, bringing home Fransico Lindor and giving New York its first lead of the day. Then Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Vientos. Even with the Phillies making a pitching change, the Mets’ bats were still hot. J.D. Martinez came into the game as a pinch hitter and hit a single down the center allowing Nimmo to get to home plate. Starling Marte closed out the inning with a sac fly as Jose Iglesias made the score 5-1 Mets.

In the bottom of the eight, Phil Maton came in to pitch, holding down the game for New York allowing only two hits and zero runs.

The bats were going for the Mets in the top of the ninth. A right field single by Nimmo had Harrison Bader coming home. The run gave New York a five-run cushion heading into the final three outs of the night. Despite allowing a run, Ryne Stanek was able to secure the win for the blue and orange.

The Metropolitans are gearing up for Game 2 of the series this afternoon with first pitch being at 4:08 PM. Tune in to FOX Sports to watch today’s game.
