Mets Completely Outplay Phillies in 5-1 Win, Continue to Make Their Case as NL East’s Top Dogs
The New York Mets just can’t stop winning.
Tuesday’s 5-1 takedown of the Philadelphia Phillies marked six straight wins, a 17-7 start, and a Citi Field fortress now 11-1. They’ve opened up a four-game division lead on Philadelphia, and they’re tied with the San Diego Padres for the best record in the National League.

Canning is Nails
Griffin Canning led the charge, continuing his underdog rise with five grind-it-out innings. He danced around eight Phillies baserunners, escaped a second-and-third jam in the fifth by punching out Nick Castellanos on a vicious slider, and walked off the mound with a 3.12 ERA.
Canning didn’t allow a home run—because no Mets starter has at Citi Field all season. That’s 12 straight home games without giving up the long ball, a franchise record.

The Mets’ staff now leads all of MLB with a 2.37 team ERA and has coughed up just ten homers total. And the bullpen is just as filthy.

Huascar Brazobán, AJ Minter, Ryne Stanek, and José Buttó tag-teamed four more scoreless frames to lock it down and drop the bullpen ERA to 2.47, third-best in baseball. Whatever Carlos Mendoza and Jeremy Hefner are cooking, it’s working.
El Capitan, Lindor’s 3-3 Game
Francisco Lindor set the tone offensively, going 3-for-5 and injecting life into every rally. He’s now hitting .301 and a pre-May .300 Lindor is terrifying news for the rest of the league.
Alonso’s 25 RBI
Pete Alonso added a two-out RBI double in the seventh—he’s now hitting .444 with RISP and owns a ridiculous 25 RBI on the year, tying Yankees’ Aaron Judge for 2025 so far.
Pete Alonso is unreal. He is 1/4 of the way to 100 RBI and it’s only April 22nd! pic.twitter.com/A7lPKqKmtI

Taylor’s 8-3 Double Play
Tyrone Taylor delivered the sneakiest highlight of the night, catching a pop fly from Castellanos and firing a seed to first to double up Kyle Schwarber for a slick 8-3 double play.

Alonso also flashed the leather, showcasing his known scoop-dominance and bailing out Mark Vientos with a backhand in the dirt, saving a run and silencing the second inning.

The Phillies are Terrified of Jesse Winker
Jesse Winker didn’t even need to make contact to send Philly into a panic. That pimped moonshot off Aaron Nola in the 2024 NLDS was complemented by another no-doubter one last night, so now Philly pitchers don’t even want to give him the opportinity to test out his freshly-tweaked swing.
He entered the game to pinch-hit for Starling Marte in the seventh inning, but was intentionally walked (probably a best-case scenario for the Phillies).
Torrens’ Bat Spike After Plating Two
Luis Torrens, quietly one of the most impactful depth additions of the year, came through with a back-breaking two-run single in the seventh to stretch the lead to 5-1. He’s been nails behind the plate and timely with the bat, hitting .228 with a .653 OPS on the year and consistently capitalizing in big moments—talk about “David Stearns Masterclass.”

The Mets Are Tied For First in the National League
This wasn’t a fluke. Many looked at this Philly-faceoff as the Mets’ first “real test” after a soft April slate. That test has now been aced in pen. The Mets are bashing your aces, babying no one, and winning every type of game on the schedule.
