A missile was discovered in a river in Cherry Hill on the weekend of November 8.
Two magnet fishers stumbled upon this discovery as they searched the area around the Cooper River. Near the Cuthbert Boulevard bridge, which overlooks the Cooper River, the two used their magnet to retrieve the older-styled military missile.
As they successfully acquired the item around 12:30 p.m., they called the police. Authorities immediately arrived at the scene, looking around the area for other missiles. A bomb squad, a subunit of the Camden County Sheriff’s Department, took possession of the device, and will safely discard the missile soon.
During the search, the area around the Cooper River remained closed to the public, reopening at around 4 p.m.
The Cherry Hill Police speculate that the missile remained in the water for a significant period of time, although it is unclear exactly how long.
Similarly, military ammunition or a bomb–the device’s specifications are unknown–was discovered in the tidal area of Sandy Hook’s nude beach. The nation’s army had a strong presence in Sandy Hook during World Wars l and ll, as they used the site to experiment and evaluate their ammunition.
With two similar situations occurring in the past month, residents have been informed to call authorities if they find ammunition or ordinance anywhere in the state. Individuals should not touch the devices, as they could be dangerous to the general public. The Cherry Hill Police specifically notified their residents to report to them about any dangerous items found in town.
