Nets Get Back On Track With Tanking And Extend Losing Streak

By Jamie Rafael Mocling-Pan

The Brooklyn Nets took four straight losses this past week, extending their losing streak to six straight games. The Nets have had a majority of their games lost due to blowouts or losing out on leads, but a spark of hope for the future in a game against the Warriors that had the Nets up for the majority of the game before it went down to the wire in the final minutes. The Nets now hold a 21-41 record in the Eastern Conference and 11th place in the standings.

Nets “Trail” Against Portland All Night In Third Straight Loss

The Nets lose in blowout fashion with a score of 121 to 102 to the Portland Trail Blazers, who have recently caught fire. The Trail Blazers were led by Sheadon Sharpe’s 25 points, who took charge in the win where the Nets had to play catch up for the entire game. The Trail Blazers led 33 to 25 in the first quarter and kept the lead going for the entirety of the game. The Nets did have the return of their best scorer in Cam Thomas, but they looked to ease him into the game rather than have Thomas play a full game. Thomas was not minute-restricted, but Nets’ head coach Jordi Fernandez did not disclose if Thomas was on a minute restriction or not. The Nets could not do enough damage even with Thomas on the floor, which led to the Trail Blazers extending their win streak.

For the Nets, Nicolas Claxton, Cam Thomas, and Killian Hayes all had 16 points each, and Cam Johnson had 14 points. Off the bench, Keon Johnson had 10 points.

For the Trail Blazers, Sharpe had 25 points, Toumani Camara had 19 points, Anfernee Simons had 14 points, Donovan Clingan had 12 points, and Kris Murray had 11 points. Off the bench, Dalano Blanton had 23 points on 8 of 11 from the field, and Scoot Henderson had 12 points.

Cade Cunningham Regains Life In Great Offensive Performance Against Brooklyn

The Nets lose another game through another blowout in a 115 to 94 loss to the Detroit Pistons. The Nets could not stop Pistons star Cade Cunningham, who lit up the floor after a recent offensive slump. Cunningham’s six points in the fourth quarter helped the Pistons win, as the Nets struggled to stop it after being within six points of tying in the fourth quarter. The Nets could not take advantage of a Pistons’ offense that could not execute in the third quarter and had a handful of loose balls throughout the quarter. The Nets had missed 14 of their first 16 shots in the fourth quarter despite being within only six points to start off the fourth, missing their opportunity for a win and losing the game.

For the Nets, Cam Johnson had 13 points, Ziaire Williams had 11 points, and Keon Johnson had 10 points. Off the bench, Tyrese Martin had 23 points, and Jalen Wilson had 14 points.

For the Pistons, Jalen Duren had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Tobias Harris had 18 points, Cade Cunningham had 15 points, and Ausar Thompson had 13 points. Off the bench, Malik Beasley had 18 points, and Ronald Holland II had 10 points.

No Wemby, No Problem For Spurs In Victory Over Nets

The Nets could not get it done against the San Antonio Spurs in a 127 to 113 loss that had a career-high scoring by Spurs’ Devin Vassell. Vassell’s 37 points helped the Spurs’ road to victory for the night as the Nets had some fight in them, thanks to great offensive performances by Cam Thomas and Cam Johnson. The Nets struggled against a Wembanyama-less Spurs, who is out for the season due to a season-ending injury discovered recently after the All-Star break. This didn’t stop the Spurs from performing well offensively and sharing the ball amongst themselves, which created scoring opportunities for the Spurs that night.

For the Nets, Cam Thomas had 24 points, Cam Johnson had 17 points, and D’Angelo Russell had 12 points. Off the bench, Wilson had 13 points, and T.J. Watford had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, along with 3 steals.

For the Spurs, Vassell had a double-double with 37 points and 11 rebounds, along with 4 steals; De’Aaron Fox had 15 points, Bismack Biyombo had 13 points, and Chris Paul had 11 points. Off the bench, Stephon Castle had 17 points, and Keldon Johnson had 15 points.

Steph Curry Lights Up Brooklyn For Comeback Win Against Nets

The Nets could not stop the Golden State Warriors in a 121 to 119 loss, which saw them losing out on a large lead. Despite a 22-point lead, the Nets could not get it done against the Warriors as they had their perennial All-Star in Steph Curry on fire for the night. The Nets struggled to stop the generational talent of Steph Curry, who lit up the floor and helped the Warriors climb out of their deficit. The Nets started off hot with a 27 to 5 lead, making 10 of their first 11 shots, and took control for most of the game. However, the dynamic duo of Jimmy Butler III and Curry helped chip at the lead and eventually executed well to get the victory over the Nets, which gave them their sixth straight loss.

For the Nets, Cam Johnson had 26 points, Cam Thomas had 23 points, Keon Johnson had 12 points, and Nicolas Claxton had 8 points, 10 assists, and 2 blocks. Off the bench, Martin had 17 points, and Williams had 10 points.

For the Warriors, Curry had 40 points, Butler III had 25 points, and Moses Moody had 10 points. Off the bench, Gary Payton II had 16 points, and Quinten Post had 10 points.

What’s Next For The Nets

Nets fans may be relieved that the team is back in tanking mode. These compiling losses can bring them closer to a top draft pick. While the losses do sting, the Nets look to have a solid young core of guys around them that were able to take the Golden State Warriors down to the wire and led for the majority of the game. A few upgrades to the team from both sides of the ball could see the Nets back in the playoff picture sooner than people may expect.
