The New York Yankees finally showed us signs of life! The Bombers did not go quietly into the night, and behind Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells and Gleyber Torres exploded for 11 runs for their first win of the series!
The offense that had been dormant for the most part finally came to life, and even Aaron Judge joined in on the action with his first RBI of the World Series. The win now sets up Game 5 on Wednesday night, as the team turns to Gerrit Cole to keep their season alive and move the series back to LA.
The game started exactly like it did in Game 3: a complete gut-punch two-run home run by Freddie Freeman to give the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead. The difference Tuesday night was that the Bombers finally showed resilience and fought back. Alex Verdugo cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 2nd inning, and the turning point came when Volpe dug in with the bases loaded in the 3rd with a chance to inject life into what had been a lifeless team thus far.
Volpe jumped on the first pitch he saw and drove it over the wall in left for a go-ahead grand slam to give the Yankees their first lead since the 10th inning of Game 1 last Friday. After the Dodgers cut the Yankees lead down to one, we got our second serving of chicken parm with Austin Wells belting a solo shot into the second deck of right field.
Gleyber Torres put the game away in the bottom of the 8th after his long ball, paired with an Aaron Judge RBI single. This was more than enough to save Luke Weaver some pitches and have Tim Mayza close the game out.
Final Game at Yankees Stadium
Gerrit Cole takes the ball in Game 5 against Jack Flaherty in a rematch of the opening game. Cole was brilliant in Game 1 but was taken out after only throwing 88 pitches and showing no signs of fatigue. His last pitch, clocking in at 98 MPH, raises questions as to why he was pulled.
The win for the Yankees marks just the fourth time in baseball history that a team down 0-3 forced a fifth game in the series. This was also the first time the Yankees have forced a Game 5 after being down 0-3 in any series in their history. There’s a long way to go, but we finally saw some life from a team that isn’t dead yet.
