The Saint Peter’s Peacocks’ fell short Friday night in their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener in a hard-fought but unfortunate 70-67 loss to the Manhattan Jaspers. This loss drops the Peacocks to 4-4 on the season as they began the MAAC slate with a loss. This loss also snapped the Peacocks’ four-game winning streak despite a game-high 18 points by Saint Peters’ sophomore, Armoni Zeigler, who went 8-of-13 and added eight rebounds on the night.
Saint Peter’s started the game strong and led 38-35 after one half of play against the Jaspers, but they were unable to keep the momentum due to inconsistent shooting and late turnovers in the final minutes of the game.
Manhattan was led and inspired on the night by freshman Fraser Roxburgh, who came off the bench and dropped a college career and season-high 17 points, five rebounds, and two assists while playing 27 minutes. Will Sydnor added 16 points on 7-for-11 on the court, seven rebounds, and two assists on the night, helping improve the Jaspers to 4-4 on the season and a conference-opening win.
The Peacocks will look to reorganize and bounce back as they prepare for their upcoming away matchup against Iona, who currently hold a 2-8 record. With MAAC play just beginning, the Saint Peter’s Peacocks still have lots of time to erase this setback from their minds and possibly make a statement in this year’s MAAC Tournament by going back-to-back.
