Princeton Win Streak Snapped by Cornell

By Nikki Gist

On Saturday, January 25, Princeton and Cornell faced off in the Jadwin Gym at Princeton University in one of the staple Ivy League matchups.

Both teams struggled to get their shots off to start the game and it was a theme that would carry through the much of the first half. The Tigers got their shooting game going with a little help from Caden Pierce but the offense really started to come alive with less than 3 minutes to go in the first half. A pair of three-point baskets made by Jack Scott and Xaivian Lee helped the Tigers start cutting into Big Red’s lead.

The second half started with a back & forth battle but Princeton was able to capitalize on a few missed shots by Cornell. Even though the Tigers had Lee, Pierce and Blake Peters rolling in the second half it wasn’t enough to overcome the performance of Cornells Nazir Williams who ended the day with 28 points.

Princeton has been falling behind a little too often in games which is something the Tigers head coach Mitch Henderson said they will continue to address.

This loss to Cornell marks the end of a seven-game winning streak for Princeton as they fall to 14-5 while the Big Red improve to 11-6. Both teams are now tied for second place in the Ivy League standings.

Princeton will take on Yale at home this Friday while Cornell will also be at home on Friday taking on Dartmouth. Both teams will face each other again in March.
