The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is working to contain the Craigmeur Lookout wildfire near Notch Road in Rockaway Township. Currently covering 140 acres, the fire is 30% contained and has led to several evacuations and road closures. Local firefighters and equipment from surrounding communities have been deployed to protect nearby homes, as the fire continues to threaten 13 structures and has led to the evacuation of eight homes on Green Pond Road.
Jefferson Township Mayor Eric Wilsusen expressed his concerns in a statement, underscoring the threat the wildfire poses to the surrounding areas and recognizing the extensive efforts of first responders. “Many may not realize this area backs up to the Jefferson Township border,” Wilsusen said. “Fire Companies #1 and #2 responded to the area of October Hill Road and the end of Notch Road to stand by because of a concern about the wildfire expanding up the ridgeline.”
To further support containment, the Forest Fire Service set a controlled backfire — an intentional burn aimed at reducing fuel that could otherwise drive the wildfire toward homes on October Hill Road. Mayor Wilsusen also addressed concerns from residents on Deerhaven Lane, assuring them that, for now, fire officials do not see any immediate danger to homes in that area.
The old Craigmeur Ski Area, now part of the Morris County Park system, is serving as an incident command center where firefighters from all over northern New Jersey are coordinating resources. “Thank you to all our first responders who have been involved in the fire operations in Rockaway and those who are now on standby on October Hill,” said Wilsusen, recognizing the dedication of emergency personnel who have been managing this incident alongside unrelated emergencies, including a house fire on Barbara Street.
Local residents have shown support by providing food and water for volunteers. The next update on the fire’s status is expected at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 2.
