Summit Animal Rescue, Excess in Kittens

By Maddy Grieco

The Summit Animal Rescue Association (S.A.R.A) faces an overpopulation issue as cats and kittens continue to remain in the rescue.

The rescue has encountered some difficulties in helping the cats and kittens find a new home, as they now have 80 felines with them at a volunteer’s house. As the rescue takes the felines in, providing them with a safe space until they can find a new residence, they are also closing opportunities to welcome more animals.

Although Julia Melton, S.A.R.A Adoption Coordinator and Fundraising Person, has devoted more than 25 years to reducing cats and kittens, according to Patch, this year has resulted in an influx of these animals in rescues.

Although it is unknown why so many individuals have brought their pets back to rescues and shelters this year, Melton guesses that rising costs of living could be a factor. As the rescue faces overcrowding, Melton and other employees are urging the public for help.

Relying on friends to take in and/or foster the animals, Melton is persistent to alleviate space and find homes for these future pets. She also mentioned, in her interview with Patch, that other shelters and rescues are experiencing the same hurdles when it comes to a lack of space and adoption.

Summit Annual Rescue Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization devoted to saving cats and kittens. In doing so, they provide felines with medical assistance, stability, safety and a temporary home until someone chooses to adopt them. Volunteers with S.A.R.A aid state residents in finding affordable spay and neuter options varieties for cats.

As more cats and kittens are brought into their care, S.A.R.A seeks financial donations and/or supplies to provide for the animals. Those who are interested can look at their website: sararescue.com.
