Ewing – The College Of New Jersey (TCNJ) Lions had another busy day on the baseball field at their home field George Ackerman in Ewing, New Jersey on the TCNJ campus.
Today they took on the Wilkes Colonials at 3:15 P.M. est.
What started out as something hopeful, quickly turned around for the Lions as they fell to the Colonels by a final score of 8-4.
The Lions were led by their head coach, Joe Godri and the Colonels were led by their head coach, Mike Guy.
In the first inning, it didn’t take long for Wilkes to score their first run. Nick Loch stole third and managed to score on a throwing error made by the center.
In the second inning, another score was made by Wilkes. The first was a home run made by Mike Show followed by another home run made by Luke Spencer.
It wasn’t until the third inning when the Lions started to catch up to the Colonels. Tyler Provost hit a single into the left field and advanced three players such as Zach Hochheiser, Gianni Marano, and Jack O’Donnell scored.
Neither team scored again until the fifth inning.
It was Wilkes that scored again, Jack Mathis reached first and managed to make it to second due to an error made in the right field. Following his move ahead, Mike Show scored again.
Luke Spencer then came to the plate and hit another home run and allowed both himself and Mathis to score in this game.
When the Lions returned to the plate, they came back hungrier than they had been for most of the game. Andrew Fernandez, Hochheiser, and Marano were all on the bases.
Justin Marcario was on the plate when he hit a single up the middle and both Hochheiser and Marano scored.
Things did not get any better by the sixth inning. James Brazofsky had advanced to third and due to another error made by the Lions, Jacob Cambria was able to score.
The last time anyone scored was in the seventh inning. Mike Show hit a single up the middle and allowed Spencer to score again.
The game finished with a full nine innings and the Colonels taking home the win.
One of the players, Justin Marcario, commented on today’s game
“It was a tough game, we just kind of beat ourselves. We just got to play better baseball and we should be fine moving forward.” Marcario said.
Throughout the game, TCNJ had several innings where the bases were loaded but they were unable to pull through to score anything for this game.
The Lions had five different pitchers during this game, John DiCostanzo, Jack O’Shea, Jack Marchese, Evan Frank, and Mike Silver who finished the game striking out two out of three batters for Wilkes.
Silver commented on how they played in this game.
“I felt good. I was out there and ready to go. It stinks that we lost but we have to clean up the little things, but we just have to move on and take care of business tomorrow.” Silver said.
Wilkes went through one more than the Lions did. They had Hunter Lawall, Ethan Grodack, Wilton Abreu, Riley Jagger, Sal Colello, and Caleb Graham.
Despite TCNJ’s loss they still held their heads high and are looking forward to tomorrow’s game.
Head Coach Godri commented on today’s game, “I felt we battled the whole game. We were just unable to kind of track them down. I thought some guys did a good job coming out of the pen, just a lot of self-inflicted mistakes,” Godri said.
The next game will hopefully be better for them.
“We just have to keep playing games, we have to execute on both sides of the ball. Take care of the baseball defensively, drive in some runs. We just left too many guys on bases.” Godri also commented.
The Lions will play again on Wednesday March 12 on their home George Ackerman against the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Bloodhounds at 1 P.M.
