Tri State Showdown: New York Rangers vs New York Islanders

By Isabella Cucci

The New York Rangers (37-35-7) rolled past the New York Islanders (34-33-11) with a huge 9-2 win in a Tri-State rivalry matchup. With the victory, the Rangers finished a clean sweep of their cross-town rival, having defeated the Isles in all 4 matchups.

New York Rangers, Igor Shesterkin had a strong showing between the pipes, stopping 44 out of 46 shots. On the other hand, Islanders’ Marcus Hogberg struggled, allowing 6 goals before being pulled. Replacing Hogberg, Tristan Lennox made his NHL debut before Hogberg returned.

Artemi Panarin was a standout, scoring two goals and one assist. He now leads the team with 87 points and has picked up points in 56 of 77 games this season.

The Islanders’ Hudson Fasching scored his first goal of the season, having last lit the lamp back on March 23, 2024.
The Rangers came out flying with four goals in the first period. Mika Zibanejad opened up the scoring with the help of JT Miller and Will Cuylle. With 6 points in the game, that line was on fire the entire game with Will Cuylle scoring. This was followed by goals from Vincent Trocheck, and Panarin.

Ten Rangers players had a multi-point night including forward Alexis Lafrenière who added a goal in the third. The third period brought more action with goals from Brett Berard (2), Panarin again, and Juuso Parssinen, who scored his first as a Ranger. Although the Islanders were able to slide two by Shesterkin, it wasn’t enough to stop the Rangers from notching a much needed win and keeping their slim playoffs hopes alive for at least one more day.

The New York Rangers continue on the road to face the Carolina Hurricanes Saturday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
