Movement to Ban Cell Phones in Classrooms

By Gerald D'Ambra

Governor Phil Murphy visited Woodbury Junior-Senior High School in Gloucester County to spotlight a growing movement: banning cellphones in classrooms. The Governor announced a $3 million budget proposal to support school districts adopting similar policies, joined by Assemblymembers Rosaura ‘Rosy’ Bagolie and Cody Miller, who are sponsoring legislation to guide schools in creating cellphone restrictions. The visit showcased Woodbury’s use of Yondr pouches, locking students’ phones from bell to bell, a policy teachers and students alike say is transforming the classroom experience. Assemblywoman Rosy Bagolie spoke to Ken about the legislation she is sponsoring.
