Wagner secures road win over the NJIT Highlanders

By Cesar Tlatelpa

In a game where defense played a huge role, the Wagner Seahawks emerged victorious Saturday afternoon on the road over the NJIT Highlanders’ with a score of 50-43, pushing Wagner up to a record of (6-4) and dropping NJIT to a (2-11) record on what’s been, a very tough half pf a season for the Highlanders.

This game was played with great defensive efforts by both teams on the afternoon resulting in this close but also low scoring circumstance. Wagners’ effective defensive plays and 52 rebounds were key in securing the win but also their field goal percentage on the court is what caused NJIT to not be able to catch up in the final moments of the game.

NJIT sophomore, Sebastian Robertson led them on the afternoon contributing 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 38 minutes on the day alongside his senior teammate Tim Moore, who played 32 minutes and pulled off a Double-double which contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds for the team but unfortunately wasn’t enough to bring home the win in Newark.

Senior, Ja’Kair Sanchez led Wagner Saturday afternoon dropping 15 points and adding 5 rebounds to his name. Ja’Kair currently averages 54.3% field goal percentage when on the court. Zae Blake came off Wagner’s sidelines and dropped the second highest scoring points on the afternoon for the Seahawks helping the team secure the victory by contributing 11 points and 3 rebounds. Zae will look very forward to breaking that 11-point game season high in Wagner’s upcoming season matches as he had already dropped 11 earlier in the season against Manor College.

With more than half the season left to go, the NJIT Highlanders’ will look to desperately turn their season around as it has not been the greatest starts to a season in their time. NJIT will be back with basketball after the Christmas holiday facing up a huge challenge against the Washington Huskies who are currently sit with a (7-3) record on their season.
